Mumble.com Mumble Client 1.6.870.2 for Linux
============================================

WHAT YOU NEED
-------------
- A 64-bit x86 PC (x86_64). ARM is not supported yet.
- glibc 2.35 or newer, such as Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, Fedora 36, or current Arch, or newer. Rocky and AlmaLinux 9
are too old. The installer checks this.
- An X11 desktop, or a Wayland desktop with XWayland. Most Wayland desktops include XWayland.

Tested on Ubuntu 22.04, Ubuntu 24.04, Debian 12, Fedora 41, openSUSE Leap 15.6 and Arch Linux. Other distributions
with the same libraries should work too.

INSTALL
-------
1. Unpack the download somewhere it can stay, such as your home folder:

    tar -xzf mumblecom-client-1.6.870.2-linux-x64.tar.gz -C ~

2. Run the installer from that folder:

    cd ~/mumblecom-client-1.6.870.2-linux-x64
    ./install.sh

It checks which system libraries this PC is missing, works out the package names for your distribution and
release, and installs them. If anything is missing, sudo asks for your password. Nothing else in the installer
   needs root.

It also adds the client to your applications menu and lets the "Open the client" button in the Mumble.com control
panel open this copy. If you move the folder later, run ./install.sh again.

3. Open "Mumble.com Mumble Client" from your applications menu, or run ./mumblecom-client from the folder.

Always start it with mumblecom-client or the menu entry, not the mumble file directly. mumblecom-client sets up what
the program needs. On Fedora and RHEL, secure connections don't work without it.

INSTALLING THE LIBRARIES YOURSELF
---------------------------------
Only needed if you don't have sudo, or you run ./install.sh --no-packages to keep it from installing anything. The
installer knows these distributions, and prints the command when it can't run it itself. Most desktops already have
these, and running the command again does no harm.

Ubuntu 24.04 or newer, Debian 13 or newer:

    sudo apt install libasound2t64 libdbus-1-3 libegl1 libfontconfig1 libgl1 libpulse0 libx11-6 libx11-xcb1 libxcb1 libxkbcommon0 libxkbcommon-x11-0 xdg-utils

   Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12:

    sudo apt install libasound2 libdbus-1-3 libegl1 libfontconfig1 libgl1 libpulse0 libx11-6 libx11-xcb1 libxcb1 libxkbcommon0 libxkbcommon-x11-0 xdg-utils

Fedora, RHEL, AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux 10 or newer:

    sudo dnf install alsa-lib dbus-libs fontconfig libX11 libX11-xcb libxcb libxkbcommon libxkbcommon-x11 mesa-libEGL mesa-libGL pulseaudio-libs xdg-utils

   Arch, Manjaro:

sudo pacman -S --needed alsa-lib dbus fontconfig libglvnd libpulse libx11 libxcb libxkbcommon-x11 xdg-utils

   openSUSE:

    sudo zypper install libglvnd libasound2 libdbus-1-3 libfontconfig1 libpulse0 libX11-6 libX11-xcb1 libxcb1 libxkbcommon0 libxkbcommon-x11-0 xdg-utils

WHAT THE LIBRARIES ARE FOR
--------------------------
These come from your system:

  Library Used for
  libasound2 or libasound2t64 (ALSA) Sound
libpulse0, or PipeWire's library Sound through PulseAudio or PipeWire, when your desktop uses them
libdbus-1-3 Talking to your desktop and its password store
  libegl1, libgl1 Drawing the window
  libfontconfig1 Finding your fonts
  libx11-6, libx11-xcb1, libxcb1 Showing the window
  libxkbcommon0, libxkbcommon-x11-0 Keyboard input

Everything else is in the lib folder of the download, including Qt, OpenSSL and the audio codecs, so you don't need
your own copies. To check for anything missing:

    cd ~/mumblecom-client-1.6.870.2-linux-x64
ldd mumble | grep "not found"

No output means nothing is missing.

STAYING SIGNED IN
-----------------
"Remember me" saves your sign-in in your desktop's password store, such as GNOME Keyring or KWallet. It is never
written to the client's settings file. The password store's service has to be running, which it is on most desktops.

Without one, the client tells you it couldn't save your sign-in, and you sign in again each time you open it. To fix
that on a desktop that has no password store, install gnome-keyring or KeePassXC with its Secret Service option on.

UPDATING
--------
Close the client, delete the old folder, then repeat steps 1 and 2 with the new download. Your settings and sign-in
are kept outside this folder.

UNINSTALLING
------------
    cd ~/mumblecom-client-1.6.870.2-linux-x64
    ./install.sh --remove

Then delete the folder. Your settings stay in ~/.config/Mumble.com and ~/.local/share/Mumble.com. Delete those too
if you don't want them. Use "Sign out" in the client first if you also want your sign-in removed.

IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG
-----------------------
- Nothing happens when it starts: run ./mumblecom-client from a terminal and read what it prints.
- "error while loading shared libraries": run ./install.sh again, and read what it says is missing.
- "version GLIBC_2.35 not found": your distribution is too old for this build.
- The control panel's button doesn't open it: run ./install.sh again.
- No sound: choose your audio system under Configure, Settings, Audio Output.
- Push to talk only works in the client's window on Wayland: this is a limit of Wayland, which keeps programs from
reading keys while they aren't in front. Use an X11 session if you need it to work from other windows.
